Twilight Books In Order
Do You Have To Read The Twilight Books In Order?
The short answer is: yes, you do have to read the Twilight books in order. Each new book builds up on the previous one in the series, and if you don't read them in the correct order, you will miss the entire story line and the book will simply not make sense.
I might be in a minority here, but the Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer was and is one of my very favorite vampire series ever. Now whether I loved the movies just as much, that is still debatable. But for the book, I devoured them within a weekend. I bought the entire series in hardcover and I read them as soon as they came to my doorsteps (it was a Friday so I was lucky).
Here you will find each of the Stephanie Meyer books in the right order of reading, along with my own review of the books. Edward and Bella...my favorite couple will feature in every single one of them. Of course we can't forget Jacob either...

Overview Of The Twilight Books In Order
Which Twilight Book Should You Start With?
- Twilight, Twilight Saga Book 1
This is the very first book that you should read. It's the book that started it all...Published in 2005.
- New Moon, Twilight Saga Book 2
New Moon continues the story of Edward and Bella, and this focuses more on Jacobs. Well worth the read. Book was published in 2006.
- Eclipse, Twilight Saga Book 3
Eclipse is the third book in the popular Twilight Saga series, and it was published in 2007.
- Breaking Dawn, Twilight Saga Book 4
Here is the last book in the series, published in 2008.
If You've Only Watched The Movies
If you've watched the movies so far, you will have noticed that there are 5 movies made.
Stephanie Meyer wrote only 4 books, however the 4th one, Breaking Dawn has been split in two parts for making the films. So there are 4 books, but 5 movies.
So you haven't missed out on any of the books!
Twilight Saga Books Reviews
Twilight, Book 1 In The Twilight Saga
Having read all the books long before the movies were made, I have to say that Twilight is still my very favorite of the series. Maybe it's because all was so new and we didn't really know what to expect, but the fact is that Twilight is the closest to my heart even after having watched the first 4 movies so far.
This is where all starts. Bella is a relatively happy but clumsy girl who goes to live with her father, who is (reluctantly) divorced from Bella's mom. He is a cop in a small town called Forks, where sunny days are quite rare and distant, and rainy and ugly days are the norm.
Bella is a teen, so she is going to the local highschool, where she first sees the love of her life: Edward Cullen...
I will not bore you with the details and not give away the plot, as if you haven't read the books, you're in for a great time. Suffice to say that the first book has the most romance and sparkle, and if you're a romantic at heart. you will love this book!
If you've come here after having watched the movies, while reading the book you will notice that the movie hasn't strayed away too much from the original plot - a good thing in my opinion.
New Moon, Book 2 In The Twilight Saga
Book 2 of the Twilight Saga follows the story line and continues where book 1 left off. That is why it's important to read the Twilight books in order right until the end.
While New Moon is another very good book, personally I liked Twilight better. The story here is mostly about Jacob and Bella, while Edward hardly being there (mostly in Bella's mind) right until the end. If you love the books because of the vampire element, you might be slightly disappointed here. But if you are a Jacob fan, you will simply love this book!
We've seen in the first book how clumsy Bella is, and it's fun to follow in this second novel Jacob's protective feelings of her, just like Edward wanted to always protect her in the first book. It's a delightful book, definitely worth reading!
Eclipse, Book 3 In The Twilight Saga
Eclipse picks up where book 2, New Moon left off. I don't want to give the plot away (you might not have watched the movies, so you don't know what comes up), but let's just say that while I found New Moon a bit boring, here the pace picked up again.
Of course Edward is back, right in the middle of Bella's world, shaking things up for her and Jacob. So if you rooted for her and Jacob, you might not like what you find here: Bella goes back to Edward in a heartbeat.
Personally I found this third book the funniest of all. The verbal duel between Edward and Jacob is just priceless, both are fighting for her and it was more than once that I left a chuckle escape my breath. I truly loved this third book, it was my favorite right after Twilight.
Breaking Dawn, Book 4 In The Twilight Saga
Finally we have the last book in the Twilight Saga series: Breaking Dawn. If you don't read the Twilight books in order, you will get utterly confused because this truly is a series that needs to be read one after the other one to understand what is going on.
When it comes to the movie, the book is actually split in 2. I'm not sure whey did it this way (maybe to get more money from the fans), but I'm in a way glad, because we get to see more of Edward, Jacob and Bella.
In this final book we get a nice closure to the story, one that I felt quite good about, in fact. I think the entire series was heading towards this conclusion (which I won't reveal, especially if you haven't read the books). The first part of the book will have some nice twists and surprises, and this is what makes the 4th movie as well.
The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner: An Eclipse Novella
Midnight Sun - The Free Novella Told From Edward's Perspective
Did you know that there is a draft of Midnight Sun on Stephanie Meyer's website? This story is basically the first few chapters book 1 told from Edward's point of view. I so wish she finished this book as well, it's really well written and quite interesting to see how Edward really thinks of Bella and the vampire life in general.
